    The beginning of the 20th century: James Branch Cabell

    James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) was writing ironic fantasy, mostly during the period 1910-30. He wrote several novels that belongs to a series: "The Biography of the life of Manuel". Cabell redefines United States history, geography and mythology and writes about heaven, hell and magic kingdoms.
    In 1919 came the book that would make Cabell famous: "Jurgen:A comedy of Justice". The book was banned and there was a trial because the book was seen as too "obscence". The main charcter Jurgen does in a weak moment wish that he would get rid of his wife, his wish is granted by an evil god, called Koshcei. He is starting a one-year journey to find her, and will get involved in relationships with women from mythologys and fairy tales.

    The trial was aquitted and Cabell had gain lot's of promotion thanks to the trial.
